Almost every traditional non-stick pan works the same way: a thin synthetic fluoropolymer coating ā usually PTFE, best known under the Teflon name ā bonded onto a metal base. That coating is the product. It's what makes eggs slide and cleanup effortless.
It's also the part that wears out first.
Metal utensils, high heat, abrasive sponges and a few thousand ordinary meals all work against it. The surface scratches, dulls, and eventually begins to flake. Some of those flakes stay in the pan. Some don't.
When a traditional non-stick pan is heated or its coating becomes damaged, PFAS-related compounds and other breakdown products migrate into food or be released as fumes. That means cookware used to prepare meals for your family could become a source of unnecessary dangerous chemical exposureāoften without you noticing it.
PTFE belongs to a family of chemicals known as PFAS ā nicknamed "forever chemicals" because they never break down, both in the environment and in the body. They remain in human blood for decades, accumulating quietly with repeated exposure.
Researchers have taken that seriously. Studies reviewed by the US Environmental Protection Agency have linked PFAS exposure to raised cholesterol, changes in liver enzymes, reduced immune response and an increased risk of cancers.
