PTFE belongs to a family of chemicals known as PFAS — nicknamed "forever chemicals" because they never break down, both in the environment and in the body. They remain in human blood for decades, accumulating quietly with repeated exposure.

 

Researchers have taken that seriously. Studies reviewed by the US Environmental Protection Agency have linked PFAS exposure to raised cholesterol, changes in liver enzymes, reduced immune response and an increased risk of cancers.
